Polar bears in captivity - a reserve for the rescue of this species

13 july 2018

In our new film we will talk about the struggle to preserve the polar bear population not only in its habitat, but also in the most advanced zoos in our country to create a healthy, genetically diverse group capable of breeding.

Scientist say that the lifespan of polar bears in captivity has increased on average by 10-12 years. First of all, this is due to the quality of their captivity conditions.

Within the framework of the Polar bear conservation program led by “NK Rosneft" it was possible to significantly expand and improve the conditions for keeping the animals in the zoos in Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don and St. Petersburg.
Recently, after visiting the zoo of Rostov-on-Don the YastrebFilm crew was convinced in it, and has seen two modern open-air cages which were reopened after the reconstruction. Now, due to a natural stone cover and a new pool with an automatic cooling system and regular filtration, these animals feel comfortable both in summer and in winter.

We will pay a particular attention in our film to the unique experience of Russian scientists in the field of breeding polar bears in captivity, which is being successfully implemented in Izhevsk.

Sergey Yastrzhembskiy intends to dispel the philistine opinion that polar bears are kept in zoos only in order to attract as many visitors as possible.
